  Chapter One

  Amelia

His cock filled her, stretched her, and she threw her head back with the pleasure of it. He was so much bigger than anyone she’d ever been with before, and a small voice in the back of her head told her she would be comparing every man to him in the future.

She raked her nails over his shoulders and his responding growl made her toes curl. The way he held her, practically lifting her off the bed so he could get as deep as possible, made her groan.

When Amelia had seen him in the club, staring at her through the dark, she’d known she was going to take him home and make him hers, even if it was just for the night. The way he’d prowled through the crowd, straight to her, how he moved – it was like nothing she’d ever seen before. When he’d touched her, just a hand on the small of her back – she’d practically burned alive.

He grabbed her chin, kissing her rough and hard, possessing her mouth and demanding her attention. All it took was a long, slow lick up his neck and nibble on his ear for him to lose control. Each stroke of his cock into her set her nerves on fire. His pace increased and she wrapped her legs around him, deepening the angle.

The pressure on her clit made the pleasure nearly unbearable and Amelia knew she was about to come. Her pussy clenched and his cock hardened right before he exploded. It sent her right over the edge. He roared as he came and she bit down on his shoulder, hard enough to draw blood, just to keep from screaming.

It took a few moments for her senses to come back to her.

The gorgeous man above her breathed hard. Those startling jade-green eyes searched her face, and despite how ridiculously gorgeous he was she pushed him off of her before things got emotional. “I’m going to take a shower,” she said as she headed to her bathroom in the dark. The storm still raged outside and she hadn’t had power for hours.

It was the only reason Amelia even went out that night. And this guy was not her usual type. She paused in the doorway and glanced back at him. Amelia didn’t even know his name. “I assume you’ll be gone by the time I’m done?”

The moon wasn’t full, but the bright moonlight in a dark city allowed her to see just enough. The January moon cast glorious shadows along every muscle of his chest and abs. The warm brown skin begged to be licked and touched. The long dark hair did something to her knees. Amelia looked to his face, ignoring how her blood boiled as he laid back on her bed as if he owned the damn place.

There was a playful smile on his lips. “If you truly want me gone,” he murmured.

She reconsidered for a moment. A relationship wasn’t on the menu, but perhaps round two…then she saw the cocky grin on his face. He expected her to tell him to stay, knew she would, because he knew exactly how attractive he was.

Amelia snorted and turned her back on him. “Thanks for the romp,” she said, knowing the dismissal would probably piss him off.

Most alpha type guys had such fragile masculinity.

But she heard him chuckle before the water drowned out any sound of him getting up and tossing the condom. Getting those tight leather pants back on after they’d been all sweaty wouldn’t be easy. Amelia stepped into the spray and made sure it was cold enough to cool the desire she felt rising back up to choke her. Just thinking of his ass in those pants made her wet all over again, but she refused to get out of the shower and give in to that cocky smile.

She had a life, one she enjoyed. Men tended to complicate that.

When she turned the water off she paused for a moment, cocking her head and listening for any sounds of him moving around in her loft. There was nothing but the freezing January rain against the windows.

Amelia wrapped a fluffy towel around her naked body and flipped on the light in her bedroom. It looked like the power was finally back on and the man who’d made her toes curl was gone.

There was no trace of him left except the rumpled sheets on her bed.

  Chapter Two

  Amelia

Amelia knotted the scarf around her neck and slipped on her gloves as she walked down the street toward her favorite coffee shop. It was a rare day off from Raven’s Publishing and she planned to have a relaxing morning.

The café was only a few blocks away and the freezing-cold air stung. Normally she’d take an Uber when it was so cold, but the walk would help her relax.

The trees were bare of leaves and there was still some slush on the ground. It would be gone by lunch for sure. It didn’t normally snow in Portland, but it had been an unusually cold winter. One she was actually enjoying. Amelia always felt like the strange one for enjoying cold weather, sweaters, and roaring fires while everyone else complained how long winter was.

When she pushed the door open to the Black Rock Coffee Bar the smell of coffee beans and quiet chatter instantly calmed her. There was hardly anyone there on a Monday morning right after the rush which was perfect. Amelia loved having Monday’s off. It was the best day to run errands and reset her brain after the insanity of her job. Nothing was due to release for months now thanks to the Christmas rush.

After ordering her ridiculously expensive pumpkin spice white mocha, she headed over to the fireplace and settled in for a morning of working on her bullet journal and reading a book she wanted to read for once. The café was quiet and the chill from the weather couldn’t reach her inside. Amelia peeled off her navy pea-coat, and her Burberry scarf and gloves. She settled in, pulling her E-reader and journal out of her bag.

One of the baristas brought her drink in a mug, beautifully topped with whipped cream and spices, along with her small breakfast. Quietly she thanked him and settled her journal on her lap. It would be another week of getting her author through the developmental editing before they would then send it to the line editors.

Amelia couldn’t wait to see the book on the shelves. No doubt her boss would ream her for something that would be difficult to market, but she didn’t think diverse books were difficult to sell when the readers were so hungry for it.

  “May I sit here?”

  She recognized that voice.

Amelia looked up and found the man from the club standing in front of her. Her
eyes went wide even though she tried to hide her shock. It had only been a few days and she’d honestly never expected to see him again. He was still just as gorgeous as the last time she’d seen him with his rich brown skin, sharp jaw, and long black hair. He had it out of the ponytail this time.

God, he was gorgeous. Why did the hottest man she’d ever seen in her life have to pop up on her day off? Didn’t fate have something better to do?

He smiled, showing off straight white teeth. That smile made her belly flutter and Amelia felt giddy. But of course instead of saying something nice and welcoming, her inner bitch came out. “What are you doing here?” she snapped.

That smile didn’t waver despite her tone. “I like coffee.” He shrugged. Still he didn’t sit, waiting for her to allow him into her space.

She narrowed her eyes but gave a sharp nod. This man had never been in her café before and there was only one reason he’d be here now.

The silence between them was strained as she purposefully ignored him, staring into the crackling fire as she sipped on her decadent coffee. He sat in the worn armchair next to hers. Amelia closed her bullet journal. The last thing she wanted was for him to see the scribbles and doodles and habit tracking she liked to do. It wasn’t just work in there, it was her whole life.

“So, I never caught your name,” he teased, his deep voice rumbling. Somehow it reminded her of hot chocolate and brandy. “I’m Kai, and you are?” He held out one of those massive hands for her to shake, the same ones that had made her whimper the other night.

She gave him a withering stare, seriously contemplating just getting her stuff and leaving. It pissed her off this man had somehow tracked her down and invaded her precious time off. “Amelia,” she finally said, refusing to shake his hand. There wasn’t much he could do with a first name alone.

He dropped his hand, completely unfazed by her rejection. “What a beautiful name.”

She rolled her eyes and started packing up. This was ridiculous. A one-night stand was supposed to be just that, one night. “I have somewhere to be,” she told him.

Kai stood up and she blinked. She’d forgotten how tall he was. “No, I’m sorry. I’ll go. I apologize if I’ve made you uncomfortable. It was nice to see you again Amelia.”

The gorgeous man who actually had a name made his way to the counter and in a few seconds he was handed his coffee in a to-go cup. Amelia watched him leave. Kai never once turned back to look at her. She couldn’t help the small pang of disappointment. Then she cursed under her breath for how stupid she was being.

Amelia was not a damsel in distress. She was not one of the women from her dirty romance books that needed a man in her life. She’d managed to stay out of a relationship for the last five years and she didn’t plan to start looking for one now.

Maybe Kai in her café was just a coincidence after all.

Amelia sat back down in her comfortable chair after Kai disappeared around the corner. The crackling flames mesmerized her, and her bullet journal was completely forgotten as memories of what he’d felt like inside her hit her. Damn, she’d almost managed to forget, and now he’d gone and fucked it up.

Amelia sighed and pulled out her E-reader. Maybe one of her book boyfriends would help her forget about Kai.

  Chapter Three

  Amelia

Amelia had one stop before she headed home after a long day at the office. If she had to hear one more author whine about how hard it was to do any type of marketing at all, she was going to lose it. All she wanted was for them to maintain an online presence. Why was that so fucking difficult?

It was pitch black outside and the orange glow of the streetlights made her feel strange and isolated despite all the people walking around her. There was something about the ice and the snow. It was almost like the freezing temperature altered reality a bit.

She tightened her grip on her scarf. The fur-lined leather gloves kept her hands warm, but there was always a slice between the end of the gloves and her sleeves where the chill managed to set in. The wind off the river didn’t help either and Amelia shivered.

The lights were on in Powell’s, beckoning her in. Amelia pushed through the doors and stood in the entryway, letting the heat settle in to her bones a bit. She breathed in deep and smelled the musty old books, new paper, and coffee. It was the perfect combination to relax her.

The sounds of the city seemed muffled in the bookstore. Powell’s City of Books was like a portal to another dimension. When she was in there nothing else existed. Amelia adjusted the strap of her purse and set off for the Young Adult section. She didn’t have time to peruse the rare book room today. It would have to wait, and the clerks had a list of books to look out for anyway.

Perks of working for a publishing company she supposed.

She found her authors’ books and made sure to face them all cover out. Three published right before Christmas and they were still doing really well. Amelia smiled. It had been a lot and she’d had to skip Christmas with the family, but it was no big loss. The books were worth it and she was proud of the finished projects.

Amelia headed to the front desk and smiled at the warm greetings. All she had to do was schedule a few author events and then she could spend some time browsing for herself. E-books were fantastic and she loved the convenience and the profit from a digital item, but paper books still held a spell over her the digital ones could never shatter.

It was hot inside the store with all her layers on. Amelia peeled off her gloves and scarf, shoving them into her purse. Sweat was starting to bead down her back. As an editor in a medium-sized publishing company she held more power than most editors in a Big Five company, but she still wanted that editor-in-chief position. Amelia wanted complete control.

Too many times they passed up a brilliant opportunity.

It was easy to see too. Sometimes that author went on to self-publish and made millions. Her editor-in-chief had a hard time seeing the potential in those non-mainstream books.

“Hello, Amelia. It’s nice to see you again.”

She whirled around and there was Kai, in all his hot, rippling-muscle glory. He leaned against the counter with a leather jacket on and a helmet in his hand. Amelia rolled her eyes. Of course, of course he rode a motorcycle. In the dead of winter. With only a leather jacket to keep him warm.

“Why are you stalking me?” she demanded. Amelia was proud of the anger in her voice when all she felt was nervous flutters in her belly. Her palms were sweaty and it had nothing to do with the heater being on full blast.

“I don’t know if I’d call it stalking,” Kai teased. “You just like a lot of the same places I do.”

The brass balls on this one. “Don’t lie to me. I have never seen you before in my life and suddenly you’re everywhere? I don’t think so.” Amelia crossed her arms and glared at him.

Kai only chuckled. “Okay, I apologize. I’ve only been kind of stalking you. Did you know you post on social media your location and what your plans are? It makes it really easy to bump into you ‘accidentally.’” He even used air quotes.

Amelia wanted to laugh. Kai was a buff, bad boy-looking hottie who had just used air quotes. She managed to clamp her mouth shut and keep her glare in place, but his eyes twinkled like he knew.

“Do you not have a job then?” Amelia knew he couldn’t be gorgeous, with a fucking eight pack, a motorcycle, and have a job. It wasn’t how the world worked. “How else can you manage to follow me around like a lost puppy?”

Kai laughed loud and hard at that though she had no idea why. “Even better,” he said, wiping tears of laughter from his eyes. “I work for myself so I make my own hours.”

“Oh.” Of course he owned his own business.

Amelia turned her back on Kai, but she felt him like a rip current in the ocean, sucking her in. His intensity, the way he stared at her like she was the only woman in the world, those full lips she wanted to bite and suck…

The store manager saved her fr
om any further embarrassment, or obligation to say anything to Kai by coming up to the counter with the current schedule. They chatted about the signings and she pushed for the weekend spots as always. Every moment she talked with the manager she was intensely aware of Kai’s eyes on her. They never once wavered and it made those butterflies in her stomach frantic.

As soon as the manager thanked her for the business and walked off, Amelia had to decide what to do next. Should she ignore Kai and look through the bookshelves like she’d originally planned, or should she just leave and avoid him?

Kai was persistent as hell. Amelia sighed. Might as well try and figure out what he wanted. “I’m going to look for some books to read. You can join me or leave.”

“I like your sass, woman.” Kai grinned and followed her through the massive bookstore.

“So tell me something,” Amelia said, running her fingers along a few of the books’ spines. “Why are you following me?”

“Well, you never gave me your number,” he said with a shrug.

Amelia eyed him in her periphery. Kai was at least a foot taller than her and his shoulders were big, big – like meathead in a gym big. She knew from personal experience his arms were just as buff though his jacket hid them at the moment.

What tribe was he from? There were a few Native American tribes in the area but she wasn’t great at pinpointing which by features alone. God, those lips of his. Ugh, why did he have to be everything she liked in a guy?
